It is found in milk, saliva, tears, and on mucosal surfaces, where it interacts both with body structures and microorganisms. One of its key actions is the ability to bind iron, an essential mineral, thereby supporting normal iron metabolism and absorption. Its very name reflects its nature: “lacto” means milk, “ferrin” means iron.
